RESEARCH CRITERIA FORM

Treatment Development Clinic:

The Development of Psychotherapy for Women with difficulties with emotion regulation and binge-eating

 

The BRTC is currently recruiting subjects for the development of a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program for 5 women meeting criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder and eating disorders.  The aim of this program will be adapting the DBT manual for this group of subjects.

 

This is a handout intended for clinician’s only and is not intended for potential participants.

 

The criteria for admission are as below

Participants:

Inclusion criteria:

1)                   females

2)                 aged 18 to 60 years

3)                   Willing to consent to research protocols i.e. willingness to discontinue current therapy if admitted, to participate in assessments, interviews, and other research procedures, and to engage in group and individual therapy for 6 months.

4)                   meeting Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) or Binge-eating disorder (BED) (DSM-IV) criteria.

·                      With Bulimia Nervosa, this is 2 objective binges (loss of control and also eating in a discrete time 2 hrs a larger than usual amount of food) per week for the last 3 months and they have to be of a purging subtype i.e. vomiting or laxative/diuretic abusing (but not fasting or overexercisers).

·                      With the research criteria for Binge-eating disorder: 2 days per week of objectively large binges for the last 6 months. The binge episodes have to meet three of the following:

1)                   eating more rapidly than usual

2)                   eating until feeling uncomfortably full

3)                    eating large amounts of food when not physically hungry

4)                    eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating

5)                    feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed or very guilty after overeating.

There also must be marked distress about the eating.

 

Exclusion Criteria:

1)                   no substance dependence

2)                   no suicide attempts in last 8 weeks

3)                   No diagnosis of Schizophrenia or Other Psychotic Disorder

4)                   No diagnosis of Bipolar Mood Disorder.

5)                   Weight not below the normal weight range i.e.  Body Mass Index is less than 19 (Body Mass Index is Mass in Kilograms/ (height in meters)2  and not above a Body Mass Index =30

6)                   Lives beyond a 40 mile radius of the University of Washington,

7)                   Court-ordered or otherwise mandated treatment.

8)                   Requires priority medical or psychiatric treatment

9)                    Are pregnant

 

Please do not assure to clients that we will be able to enroll them as we may have to provide referrals if they do not meet research criteria.

 

If you have any questions regarding a referral or possible exceptions to our criteria, please call and consult with our intake staff. Potential clients should know that they can also call for information only. There is no obligation and we place no pressure to participate.

 

Agreement to enter the study involves agreement to:

1.                     Stay in treatment for 6-8 months;

2.                     Participate in an adaptation of the DBT treatment program which includes both group and individual treatment and which will be taped;

3.                      Complete a 10-minute weekly record that may include ratings of eating behaviors, mood and suicidal behaviors.

4.                      Pay a sliding scale fee for therapy sessions.

5.                      Pay for and obtain medical assessment or monitoring for eating problems and related problems if requested by your therapist.

6.                      Not seek additional professional mental health treatment not approved by your individual psychotherapist. If on medication for the eating disorder, if your therapist requires it, work with your prescribing health provider to taper off these medications (e.g. antidepressants) in the course of treatment. This is a cost that you would incur;

7.                      Complete all in-depth assessments which are taped during the course of the study.
